Sri Lanka is rightly known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean

In addition to Thalpe House’s large pool and garden, the reef protected beach outside offers a fascinating world for small children and those who wish to explore the rock pools for tropical fish, crabs and shells.  A short stroll takes you to a protected swimming lagoon or a five-minute tuk-tuk ride finds you at Wijaya Beach offering year round swimming – perfect for children.

For those wanting to venture out to explore, there is plenty to discover.  You can hire a bike and cycle through the local paddy fields and rainforest, visiting temples and tea plantations along the way. A visit to the local turtle sanctuary is a must for children and there are boat trips on Koggala Lake to visit small islands and secret coves, the ideal place to enjoy a picnic prepared by Isuru and the Thalpe House team.

Galle Town and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort are a twenty minutes tuk-tuk ride away.  With an expanding selection of boutiques, cafes and galleries, coupled with its stunning architecture, losing yourself in the Fort’s labyrinth of old streets is a wonderful way to spend a day.
